On a hot summer day in 2004, an unfortunate porta john mishap in Savannah, Georgia, led to a great idea. The result was Royal Restrooms, a true disruptor in the portable bathroom and shower rental industry.
The man behind the idea was commercial banker David Sauers, Jr. As he and his family were enjoying an outdoor festival, the inevitable call of nature struck his young daughter. Sauers approached the porta john with his daughter and infant on his hip, but it had no lights, no toilet paper, no running water, no soap, and no room for all three of them. Disaster ensued, leaving dad and daughter soiled and the infant in the arms of a stranger. Their day at the festival was done, ended prematurely by a substandard porta-potty.
Sensing an untapped market, David resolved to develop a sanitary and comfortable portable bathroom option—a solution combining basic necessities with luxury perks. He partnered with friend and engineer Robert Glisson to do just that. Leaving successful careers behind, Sauers and Glisson co-founded Royal Restrooms® and paved the way for a new evolution in luxury portable bathroom rentals.
Restrooms were built on custom trailers outfitted with exterior lights, stairs with handrails, and occupancy light indicators. Spacious interiors included functioning bathroom fixtures, lights, vanities and mirrors, climate control, and toiletries. Sauers and Glisson further defined their Royal Restrooms brand, calling it a “Regal Portable Restroom Experience™” and added contemporary décor, music, rugs, pictures, flowers, and their signature butter mints on the granite countertops.
Early on, the two men worked weddings, backyard oyster roasts, and small company events until Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana. Sauers was deeply moved by what he saw on his trip to the disaster zone.
"Up until then, we had used our restrooms for parties and weddings. We had to rethink our mindset. We were driving into what looked like a war zone. From that moment on, we rethought our purpose. While we provide luxury portable restrooms for weddings, parties, sporting events, and non-profit celebrations, we also provide them for any time in life, be it a business remodel or a disaster relief situation. We want to be there in your time of crisis, and we don't just mean when your in-laws are coming to town."
Today, there are over 40 Royal Restrooms offices located all across the country. Each office is independently run by owner/operators dedicated to serving the communities in which they live. Royal Restrooms owners offer a unique and knowledgeable perspective in the events industry, and they are committed to delivering the Regal Portable Restroom Experience™ with every client interaction.
